Intuition 101

As a coach, I work with clients to help them figure out what’s holding them back so they can create what they want most in life.  Each person’s story and situation are unique, but what it usually comes down to is this:

  • Our intuition knows what we need and want.  We just have to learn how to tap into it.

  • We can all learn how to listen to and trust our own intuition.

  • We can learn how to filter out all the noise and clutter that blocks us from being able to hear our intuition.

  • Developing our intuition-skills can drastically improve our lives. By learning how to trust our intuition, we can:
    • make better decisions
    • connect better with others and improve our relationships
    • experience less fear, anxiety and limitations

I believe this to be true.  We all have the answers to our problems, dreams, desires, and goals inside of us. But as humans living in a noisy, fast-paced world, it is often hard to slow down and listen to the voice inside us that knows what’s best. Coaching is simply helping someone find the answers within.

Why is it so hard to find the answers within?

I think that there are several reasons, but the main reason is that we often can’t distinguish the difference between  our thoughts, fears, anxiety, trauma triggers, and intuition.  Everyone has the voice of intuition inside, but the world, our life experiences, and the noise of living on earth has made it very hard to recognize which voice within is intuition, and which voice is a thought, fear, or an anxious trauma trigger.

What is intuition?

For me, it is all or any of the following:

  • Inner knowing/inner wisdom
  • The voice of truth inside
  • Your soul speaking to you
  • God speaking to you from the inside
  • Your higher self
  • Your inner compass

I’m sure there are many other definitions.  But to me, it is the sense of inner knowing that connects me to a higher power.  I believe that this higher power connects us all to each other.

Do we all have intuition? 

I believe we all have intuition.  How you define it is up to you, but I believe we all have intuition. It is like a muscle that we must develop with practice and use.  Some of us know how to tap into it and trust it.  Others don’t even know they have it, so they don’t know how to tap into it. Some may get hints or glimpses of intuition but have been taught by the world that it’s best to follow logic or the reasoning mind in all cases. 

 Some dismiss their intuition because it can’t be proven, so they haven’t developed the skill or the muscle to tap into it and trust it.

How do we know what is intuition and what is all the other stuff: fear, doubt, worry, trauma triggers, thoughts, etc.? 

I think that the first step in learning how to recognize the voice of your intuition is to recognize what it is NOT.  Here is what intuition is not:

  • Fear
  • Anxiety
  • Beliefs
  • Limiting beliefs
  • Thoughts
  • Trauma triggers
  • Social programming
  • Biases

In fact, the above list (plus many more) are all part of the noise and clutter that blocks us from hearing our intuition.  These noisy blocks prevent us from hearing our intuition and make us feel confused and uncertain.
